“Just as the rain and the snow come down from the sky and don’t return there without watering the earth, making it conceive and yield plants and providing seed to the sower and food to the eater, so is my word that comes from my mouth; it does not return to me empty. Instead, it does what I want, and accomplishes what I intend.”
Many of us choose to leave the gift of God’s word (our Bibles) on a shelf unopened.
It has become more of a decorative piece for our visitors to look at and either be impressed or amused.
Some of us actually do open our Bibles or consider momentarily the Word of God as we hear it in the pulpit. Then we decide it is irrelevant to our current lives and we toss it aside.
Others are far more savvy. They recognize that they can manipulate people with God’s Word. So they misuse this blessed seed to extort money from others…manipulate others into giving them sexual favours. And even abuse people’s basic human rights. Once they have achieved what they want, they dump this gift from God and move on to ‘bigger and better’ conquests.
What we need to do is open up this supreme gift of love from God. Accept it. And nurture it through prayer, and practice. Then this seed will grow and flourish, to give us love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control…the qualities that will sustain us in our darkest and happiest times.
The best part is, this gift is one we cannot be silent about. This gift of the Word of God can be shared and should be shared and passed along to others who admire what we have received and long to understand their own gift from God.
Today I pray that God will help us to live in His love and grant us the opportunity to spread that love throughout our sphere of influence…amen!
