Unlit candles

What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ

Philippians 3:8

All light comes at the expense of the fuel which produces it.

An unlit candle does not shine…it is in the burning of the wick that light is produced.

Likewise, we are of little use to others without a cost to ourselves…but burning suggests suffering, and naturally we try to avoid pain.

Most of us want the glory without the cross…and the shining light without the burning fire…but crucifixion must come before coronation…and that is Paul’s point in the above scripture.

Paul gave up everything – family, friends, and freedom – in order to know Christ and experience His power.

We too have access to this knowledge and power, but we must sacrifice something…

So the question is…what are we willing to give up to know Christ?

The correct and scary answer is everything!

Because no matter what we give up…knowing Christ is worth more than our sacrifice.

Lord, strengthen me today, as I burn and sacrifice for You. Lift me up high in this life so that even as I drip wax from burning…I will shine brightly for those who live in darkness. Amen!
