Keeping it real with God

“Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”

John 15:13–15

God is cool…it is us who need to learn to relax in His presence and not bring performance pressure into our sacred space of communion with Him.

When we are with a person we truly love and trust…we feel free to be ourselves…this is one of the joys of true friendship.

So how come…when it comes to God is our friend…we get all proper and sometimes jittery when we talk to Him? As if there are marks for the correctness of prayer…

It is true that He is Lord of lords and King of kings…but He also desires to be our intimate Friend. And when we are tense or pretentious in our relationship with Him, He feels hurt.

He already knows the worst about us…but He also sees the best in us…and all He longs for is for us to trust Him enough to be fully ourselves with Him.

Prayer

Dear God, I sometimes get tense when it comes to talking to You…and I try to use my most polished speech. Help me to relax and enjoy my friendship with You. I know You are Yourself with me…grant me the grace to also be my most genuine self with You. Amen!
