Chickens & Eagles

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 8:38–39.

There’s an African proverb which goes something like this, “When the chicken dances for the Eagle…the Eagle is not impressed”

That’s often how we treat God…where God is the chicken and we are the Eagle…let me explain.

God loves us everyday as though we’re in a brand new marriage. Throughout the day He places tiny treasured along our way just to please us and keep us excited about Him….

Treasures like the stranger who shows up just in time to open the door when our hands are full…

Or the parking spot that opens up right when we drive in….

All these miracles are loving gestures…little pleasures that God plants just to brighten our day.

But like the Eagle we are not impressed.

We behave like we’re in a stale marriage…and we barely notice these gifts and often we complain that because manna has not fallen from heaven…God does not love us. Sometimes we even claim that He is not even there.

But scripture assures us that nothing under the sun can ever separate us from the love God has for us. So let’s have faith that no matter what…He is there.

Dear God, forgive me for failing to appreciate all You do for me…and for sometimes failing to notice your presence. Help me to look carefully for those little miracles You perform just for me. And may I pluck them one by one so that when I come to the end of the day, I can offer You a grateful heart and receive Your peace as I lie down to sleep. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
