“Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles:”
Luke 6:12-13
When it was time for Jesus to choose His apostles, He didn’t go through the normal hiring practices of accepting resumes, conducting background checks, and interviewing potential candidates. He used a better way: He prayed for God’s guidance and then chose them.
But the list was not promising.
Making the cut was a hothead named Simon, a doubter named Thomas, a tax collector named Matthew, and a betrayer named Judas.
In the end, although most of His chosen ones would trust and believe in Him…one would betray Him…some would deny Him…and all but one would abandon Him.
Strangely Jesus knew all this before hand…and yet He was willing to grant them the power to represent Him.
You and I are just as poor a choice…we are not chosen because of our pedigree, our race, or our spiritual grade point average (GPA).
We are chosen despite the fact that the task is beyond our ability.
But God has filled us with what it takes. So even though we often feel like running in the opposite direction…we must trust that He has equipped us with what we need to be His witnesses.
Prayer
Dear God, thank You for choosing me as one of Your ambassadors. As poor a choice as I am, help me to tell others about You and what You have done for me. Amen.
Amen. Just as you are he ‘s ready to receive you. That’s our God.
