“Love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great …”
Let’s be honest, this scripture just seems wrong and downright unfair.
And this view is manifest in the many Christians who are bitter and angry because they feel as if they have given, and given, and given (their faith, morals, money, and prayers) and yet their children, or their church, or their government leaders do not respond according to their wishes.
But Jesus’ instruction is actually not for the benefit of our enemies or our ‘frienenemies’…it’s for our own benefit. And here’s why:
If we give as Jesus gave, expecting nothing in return…then we will be free from the frustration of feeling that people haven’t responded as we had hoped.
The Gospel is a giveaway…even to our enemies…and if we take this approach, we will be happier, and so will the people around us.
Dear God, because I’m selfish, it’s tough for me to keep giving and doing good for no reward. But help me to follow Your instruction. Help me to give to others as You have given to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
