“Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.”
1 Timothy 1:13
The secret to Pauls success in mentoring Timothy was that he was honest about his faults.
He sat Timothy down and named his sins one by one…blasphemy, persecution, violence, ignorance, and unbelief.
Paul did this because it was important to him that Timothy saw him not as a hero but as a beneficiary of God’s Grace. Essentially He was pointing Timothy away from himself and towards Jesus.
The best mentors don’t pretend that they have it all together…their greatest influence comes when they reveal Christ through their own failures and share their story of God’s faithfulness.
We all have opportunities to share how God’s grace has been poured out abundantly in our lives. The question is are we willing to be transparent enough to share how God has restored our brokenness?
Dear God, help me to be honest about my sinfulness, and guide me to tell others about your grace. May my only boast be in Jesus Christ, whose grace is sufficient to overcome all my sins. Amen.
