“Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say…””
Sometimes life gets the best of us, and we reach out to friends who we hope can give us some relief.
But sometimes friends let us down. Sometimes the people we turn to don’t understand…or don’t really care. Sometimes we misread the people we confide in…and they betray our trust. And then we have some friends like the one in our parable, who help only because they can’t get out of helping.
But we set ourselves up for these disappointments, because there is one Friend who never lets us down: the Lord Jesus. He is the Friend who’s always there…who never puts us on hold…and who never turns us away.
Now admittedly, He doesn’t always give us what we want…but He has proven time and time again that He will give us exactly what we need. And what we need whether we choose to accept it or not is the Holy Spirit. He and not our best friend is our comforter, our provider and our only trusted confidant.
Dear God, fill us with your Holy Spirit. And help us to see that when we really need a friend, He is our only true friend in all circumstances and at all times. Amen.
