“As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.”
In Jesus’ day people constantly wanted to see miraculous signs by Jesus before they would believe. We haven’t changed much from the days of Jesus. We’re still yearning for those signs and wonders. And that yearning, and sometimes what we’re willing to pay after we see them is what drives some church leaders to perform what appear to be miracles for our entertainment.
But Jesus made clear that miracles are not for entertainment purposes. They are to help people with their unbelief and to edify God.
When Jesus died He performed the ultimate miracle. He showed us the “the sign of Jonah.” Just as Jonah was “buried” for three days in the belly of a fish. So too, Jesus was be buried in the belly of the earth for three days, after He died on the cross. Then He rose to life again and walked out of His tomb, the risen Savior!
Today Jesus is frustrated with our lack of belief and our expectations of miracles. Because it seems as if no matter what He does we still need proof. So much so that we’re unwilling to accept Christ unless we see magic performed in His church.
Dear God, forgive me for my unbelief. Teach me to read your Word and find my belief there and not in common tricks by mere men. Amen
