“Make every effort to enter through the narrow door …”
Many of us are indecisive people who simply can’t get started in a new direction. We get into a certain pattern of life and we stay there for years. We would like to be closer to God and make a difference in the world, but it is just so comfortable and secure right where we are. So we stay there.
Jesus uses today’s parable to address just this situation. We all encounter Jesus just like we encounter rain. He blesses the good and the bad alike. But even though standing in the rain is a relationship with water, swimming is a completely different relationship with water. This is what Jesus means by, “Make every effort…”
Nobody decides to get rained on…it just happens. But to swim requires a decision, and a commitment to that decision. To know Christ requires a decision, and a commitment to that decision.
Dear God, agitate me if you must; disturb me if we need it; do whatever it takes to move me toward a faithful relationship with You. Amen.
