“Come, for everything is now ready.”
Last year everyone wanted to be invited to Harry and Meghan’s wedding. BBC spent endless hours talking about who had made the invitation list. And every invited guest was sure to make an appearance.
In our scripture, quite the opposite is true. A man prepared a lavish banquet and invited several ‘important people.’ But on the day of the banquet, when the servants went out to announce: “Come, for everything is now ready…” the guests started to give last minute excuses as to why they couldn’t attend.
Today we are those ‘important people. And God has invited us to participate in His banquet…His kingdom. The problem is that, many of us treat God’s banquet hall like a fast food restaurant, where we eat, talk on the phone, and check our messages at the same time. We are so distracted with what we have going on that we barely have time for the host.
But following Jesus calls for loyalty and wholehearted devotion to Him. Those who wish to enjoy it must come. For the rest of us we must decide on what we are doing with Jesus’ invitation.
Dear God, search my heart, remove my excuses, and enable me to accept Your offer of salvation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
