“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?
Watchtowers in Jesus day provided a lookout for watchmen to warn against an approaching enemy. This way, the king could rally his troops and defend his territory. Jesus in this parable was offering a defensive strategy for success in the battles. His advice was that there needed to be strong commitment to preparation. In other words key defense mechanisms like the watchtower needed to be complete. An incomplete watchtower was an indication that the King was not committed to his defense strategy.
Admittedly the days of watchtowers as defense mechanisms are long gone, however as Christians we are still in the battle of life. And so we must have our spiritual defensive strategy in place. To roam this world with all its trials and tests of faithfulness, without a comprehensive spiritual defense strategy is like a King whose defense budget left his watchtower incomplete.
The question Christ is asking us is whether we are committed to following Him till the end. If our answer is yes then we must be ready for the cost. Otherwise, like the king who planned poorly, our defense mechanism will fail us when the enemy confronts us and we will lose heart and give up on our journey with Christ.
Dear God, help me to count the cost and commit to serving You. Please give me the grace to pursue the course you have given me. Amen.
