“By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?” Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. John’s baptism—where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?” So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.” Then he said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
‘Are you the Messiah?’ is the question the Jewish leaders were really asking Jesus.
The Pharisees held a fixed view of how the Messiah should come. And how He should be when He comes. Their insistence on this narrow view of God was why Jesus left them grappling in their stubbornness of heart.
Many of us are stuck in that exact same rut. We have chosen to ignore the sovereignty of God, and are convinced that anything from God must fit into a particular formula or format. Outside of that, we cannot accept Christ, even when He is staring us in the face.
Dear God, teach me this Advent, to recognize Christ, not only as my pastor says He should be, but as He reveals Himself to me and in-line with Scripture. Amen.
