From disgrace to grace

“Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream…When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife.”

Matthew 1:19-20, 24

Joseph’s situation teaches us a vital lesson about what God can do with what the world considers to be a scandal.

Even today, as liberal as the world is, pregnancy outside of marriage, divorce, and a few other sins are still considered scandalous and are frowned upon.

This response from the world can cause many of us to make decisions that are contrary to the will of God. Likewise, Joseph was on the verge of rejecting God’s plan because he was concerned about what the world would think and say.

Many of us have lied, pretended, and executed all kinds of complex plots just to make sure we are in line with man’s approval. But today’s gospel teaches us that if we place all our ‘mistakes’ in the hands of God, He has the divine ability to bring good out of situations that the world thinks are scandalous.

Prayer

Dear God, I know nothing is impossible for you. Please give me the boldness to place my issues in your hands and face the world confidently, knowing that you will turn my disgrace into grace. Amen
