Barrenness

“There was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.”

Luke 1:5-7

Everything we yearn for, but lack, is a form of barrenness in our lives.

The appearance of the ‘barren woman’ several times in scripture, Sarah, Rebekah, Samson’s Mum, Jacob’s wife, as well as Elizabeth, is an indication of the fact that barrenness is part of God’s plan.

In each of these stories, God used their barrenness to increase their faith. And when their seed was finally born, it made a marked difference, not just for them, but for the entire world.

As we continue to look to God to grant us whatever we seek, be it a job, a spouse, healing, or even a child, may He grant us the hope and faith of each of these barren women. And may what we birth be a blessing and miracle not only to us but to the whole world. Amen.
