An invitation to bond

“A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.” “Who are my mother and my brothers?”he asked.”

Mark 3:31-32

This scripture, read incorrectly, may seem like Jesus was so far gone that now He was completely denying His family.

On the contrary, He was pointing out to the crowd and to us that, in as much as blood relationships count heavily, the primary relationship in life is to God. And within that primary love, the deepest and most natural bonds can be formed.

And so His statement was actually an invitation to us to a totally new life. When we are born into that new life, we will be His brothers and sisters with a bond even deeper than the normal ties of family. This is the invitation which He still extends to all of us.

Prayer

Dear God, my family is extremely important to me, and I never want to lose that bond. But I know the real call is within Your family of faith. Help me and my family to do Your will as a sign that we accept this invitation to form a deeper bond to You and to each other. Amen.
