Traditions of Men

“You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men. From within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.”

Mark 7:8, 21-22

God is far more concerned with the condition of our hearts than with our outward appearance.

Jesus in this Gospel lists some of the shameful things that can live inside us and points out that we cannot be cleansed simply by trying harder – looking pious, going to church more, saying ‘godly’ things and doing things that will impress man.

If we do that, we might manage to look clean and holy on the outside but we’ll still be unchanged inside.

The only successful way to overcome the brokenness inside us is to come to the Lord and ask for a change of heart.

Prayer

Dear God, I know my own life is not immune to the shameful things Jesus lists here. Please cleanse my heart and renew my spirit by Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
