“For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person,’”
Jesus lingers on this point to show us how unimportant the external is, and how very critically important our internal being is.
Even though as Christians we hear this all the time, we still find ourselves thinking more about how we can improve our external conditions; our clothes, our car, the impression we give others etc. And we spend very little time and effort thinking about how we can be kinder, more forgiving, and more faithful towards each other.
Dear God, thank You for pointing to my inside, for pointing away from my behaviour to my intentions. Help me to stop focusing on my outer appearance and actions, and to focus on my inner movements of love or envy. Amen.
