Humbled and exalted

“The greatest among you will be your servant. All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Matthew 23:11-12

As people, we honour success, wealth, and the pretence of self-importance.

But the Christian identity is servant, disciple, and humble follower.

In our faith, greatness is seen in love, and in being willing to serve the needs of others, as Jesus did.

Jesus did not just talk about service…He practiced service. And it can be seen most profoundly when He washed the feet of the disciples.

This Lent, let us strive to be humble enough to serve somebody and to do something really relevant for them.

Dear God, help me to be a better follower of Yours, and to listen for what You are trying to tell me. May my daily meetings with You quietly transform me. In the words of the beautiful prayer, ‘may I see You more clearly, love You more dearly, and follow You more nearly’ (Saint Richard of Chichester). Amen.
