Whoever wishes to be great…must serve

“But Jesus called them to him and said, ‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant.”

Matthew 20:25-26

Like most mothers, the mother of James and John was ambitious for her sons. She wanted the top place at the table with Jesus for them.

But Jesus made it clear to them that the one who serves most is the one who will be in the most honoured place with God.

When we observe Jesus in the gospels we see that He was the servant of all. This is the way Jesus shows the love of God among us. And this is the way He will determine which of us will sit in a place of honor.

Dear God, remind me that to serve is to love. Teach me to love by going beyond myself and my needs for others. Amen
