Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfil. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.
It is difficult to reconcile Jesus’ words here with His freedom of spirit in many matters concerning the Sabbath, tithes, taxes etc.
And that difficulty has led to many arguments between those who say they are ‘religious’ and those who say they are ´spiritual.’
But there is no need for debate because Jesus did not reject the Old Testament of the Jews, but brought it back to its basics: to love God and to love our neighbour.
And He stresses here as He does elsewhere, that our life should be consistent. People should be able to read our principles from our behavior…and not from our ability to tell them what the Bible says.
Each of us should strive to live one sermon rather than to preach a dozen.
Dear God, make me to know Your ways; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth, and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation. (Psalm 25:4-5). Amen.
