In these lay many invalids—blind, lame, and paralysed. One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, ‘Do you want to be made well?’ Jesus said to him, ‘Stand up, take your mat and walk.’ At once the man was made well, and he took up his mat and began to walk.
The question, “Do you want to be made well?” seems to have an obvious answer.
Of course he wants to get well!
But Jesus was asking a deeper question. He was probing the man’s heart. He wanted to know if the man wanted to change his lifestyle…be healed in mind, body and soul…be transformed inside and out,
And that is Christ’s question to each of us. Are wee willing to completely turn away from our lives of fear and doubt and lukewarmness?
If we are, He can give us the power to pick up our mat and be out of here…and we never have to come back to this kind of life again. But it starts with us…we must desire it first.
Dear God, I surrender everything to You. Lift me up, make me stand, and never let me slip back into ways of sin. In Your name I pray. Amen.
